Hannah (Holcomb) Skaggs, sister of Azariah Holcomb, was born in 1812 in Missouri. Their brother Enoch Holcomb died intestate and without a surviving wife or children so that his estate was divided between his siblings. That estate settlement was filed in the probate court of St. Louis County, Missouri in 1852, case #03827B, and is readily available on the Missouri Digital Heritage site in the Missouri Judicial Records.
She married James Skaggs in Ste. Genevieve Couty, MO in 1830 [f. 9]

Hannah (Holcomb) Skaggs is living in the household of her daughter Nancy (Skaggs) Witter, who married Chester Rood Witter on April 18, 1862, at Salt Spring Valley in Calaveras County, California. This probably indicates that James and Hannah Skaggs had moved to California by 1862 or that James Skaggs had died. Could they have been in route to California when the 1860 census was taken?

Hannah (Holcomb) Skaggs is buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery of Hollister, San Benito County, California, as is her daughter Nancy A. (Skaggs) Witter. Her tombstone reads: Hannah F. Skaggs 1811 - 1886.
